The Inaugural Ceremony of the Indonesian Architects Council at the AAC

From July 26 to 29, 2023, the Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI) hosted the ASEAN Architect Congress (AAC) in Makassar, Indonesia. Architect Congress AAC) in Makassar, Indonesia. This prestigious event served as a primary platform for architects in the ASEAN region to gather, share knowledge, and celebrate diversity in the field of architecture.

This world-class prestigious event, attended by the Minister of Trade, Mr. Zulkifli Hasan, and the Minister of Public Works and Housing, Mr. Basuki Hadimuljono, brought together architects and stakeholders from across the ASEAN region. One aspect that made this year’s AAC particularly special was the inauguration of members of the Indonesian Architects Council (DAI), which took place during the event's opening ceremony.

What is AAC?

ASEAN Architect Congress (AAC) is an annual meeting organized by the ASEAN Architects Council (ASEAN... Architect Council(AAC) is an annual meeting organized by the ASEAN Architects Council, which consists of 10 member countries: Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The main goal of AAC is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and ideas among architects in the ASEAN region. The event also aims to promote sustainable and innovative architecture and to address current issues in the architecture and construction industry.

This year’s AAC was held in Makassar, South Sulawesi. As the host country, Indonesia carefully selected Makassar to showcase the beauty and rich cultural heritage of the nation. The event spanned several days, starting on July 26 and concluding on July 29, 2023.

Inauguration of the Indonesian Architects Council at the Event Opening

One of the most solemn moments of this year’s AAC was the inauguration of the members of the Indonesian Architects Council. As an organization representing Indonesian architects, the DAI plays a crucial role in advancing the field of architecture in the country.

In accordance with Ministerial Decree PUPR No. 790/KPTS/M/2023 concerning the inauguration of the Indonesian Architects Council for the 2020–2025 term, the DAI announced the inauguration of its members. This marks a historic moment for the architecture profession in Indonesia, as 9 DAI members were officially inaugurated. The inaugurated members are:

  1. Ar. Aswin Indraprastha, IAI
  2. Ar. Bambang Eryudhawan, IAI
  3. Ar. Didi Haryadi, IAI *) Passed away on August 9, 2023
  4. Ar. Gunawan Tjahjono, IAI
  5. Ir. Imam Santoso Ernawi, MCM, M.Sc.
  6. Ir. Lana Winayanti, MCP, PhD
  7. Ar. Sonny Sutanto, IAI
  8. Ar. Stevanus J. Manahampi, IAI
  9. Ar. Yuswadi Saliya, IAI

This inauguration represents DAI's commitment, based on the law, to strengthen the professional community and the field of architecture in Indonesia. The newly appointed members will collaborate institutionally to oversee order within the construction industry in general and the building design and environmental planning sector in particular. Their efforts will begin with establishing the rights and obligations as well as the authority and responsibilities of an architect/designer, extending to the enforcement of principles in designing buildings that are safe and comfortable, secure and efficient, accessible and aesthetically pleasing, as well as sustainable.

Other Activities at AAC

In addition to the inauguration, the ASEAN... Architects Congress The ASEAN 2023 event offered a variety of beneficial activities. The program began with training on the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct for Architects to ensure that architectural practices in the ASEAN region adhere to high ethical and professional standards.

The congress session became the centerpiece of the event, where architects and industry stakeholders shared insights on the regulation of the architectural profession, innovations in sustainable architectural design, and current issues in the industry.

The AAC concluded its event on a high note. Participants enjoyed a heritage tour featuring a stunning sunset aboard a traditional Pinisi boat at Losari Beach. A visit to the Geopark, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, provided AAC members with the opportunity to explore sustainable nature conservation efforts.

The Indonesian Architects Council's Aspirations Through AAC

The Indonesian Architects Council holds great aspirations through its participation in the AAC. They hope to:

  • Improving Architectural Quality: The DAI is committed to enhancing the quality of architecture in Indonesia through education, standardization, and the promotion of best practices.
  • Inspiring the Younger Generation: The DAI aims to inspire young people to pursue careers in architecture and provide them with support in developing their creativity and skills.
  • Contributing to Sustainable Development: The DAI strives to play an active role in sustainable development in Indonesia by designing environmentally friendly buildings and contributing to the reduction of the carbon footprint.

With the inauguration of the Indonesian Architects Council members as its main highlight, AAC 2023 in Makassar has become one of the most anticipated events on the regional architectural calendar. With a passion to inspire and drive growth and development in the construction and architecture industry, the DAI hopes that this event will strengthen Indonesia's role on the ASEAN architectural stage.
